actual review
it's functional out of the box, i've only had it for half a day and so far it seems to keep time accurately. it is definitely cheaply made. It is tin or some other cheap thin metal, but in my opinion the casing isn't what is important, it doesn't look horrible. the bells have a tinny sound to them but are loud enough to wake you up, the length of alarm duration will depend on how much you wind the alarm but should be sufficiently long enough to wake you. I can't judge the internal mechanisms, there doesn't seem to be a way of opening it up without destroying the clock, but i would surmise that the gears are plastic and not metal. If this clock stops working in the near future I will update. UPDATE: well almost a month later its still working but i have yet to get it to keep accurate time. No matter what i seem to do within 24 hours it is a few minutes fast or slow. UPDATE 2: 2/20/2022 the clock still works but it took this long to fine tune it to the point where it keeps fairly accurate time. UPDATE 3: 4/12/22 the clock still works but its back to not keeping accurate time, there must be some issue within the mechanism that isn't functioning right.

Functions but you can't opt to silence ringer.
Overall I am glad I got this and I do recommend it. If you live in an area like I do where electricity is not dependable (Florida) and you don't want to be constantly buying new batteries then a wind up is the way to go and this was the best choice I saw on Amazon for that purpose. Pros: Will never stop due to dead batteries or loss of power Is loud enough to wake up anyone not in a coma Easy to use and simple to set, no complicated buttons to push Reliable very old design Cons: The lever used to silence the alarm stops working after a few uses. The alarm while loud does not last long, perhaps 20 seconds. You can easily break this by over winding the clock and the alarm (do not wind more than 6 rotations) One winding will only last about 24 hours. So you have to wind this every night before you go to bed

It will wake you up!
As somebody who struggles with finding alarms loud enough to wake me, I decided to go old school. My phone was too easy to snooze. This alarm clock works great. It’s loud enough to wake me up. Since you actually have to turn a lever to silence the alarm instead of just slapping a button, it keeps me out of bed while I try to make my brain function and find the lever! By the time I’m functioning enough to turn it I’m awake enough to stay out of bed. I think the description says it’s a 36 hour wind. I let mine run down over the weekend just to see how long it would last. It made it about 55 hours before dying. As far as quality, you get what you pay for. This is an inexpensive clock and the materials reflect that. It gets 5 stars because it does exactly what I need it to do and a great price. Note: Some people commented that all of the knobs on the back were difficult to turn due to size and proximity to each other. I have had no problems with this, but I have very small hands that do delicate work on a daily basis. For those with larger hands or less dexterity, I could see this being a problem. For me, not so much! Update: 11/12/18 I stopped using this because it is loud. I frequently have difficulties going to sleep and the ticking of this clock exacerbated the problem. I still have it and I may go back to it in the future, but at this time I am not using it.

Maybe the best of the wind-ups?
To add a little detail to the other reviews, there are a number of things that stand out with this product when compared with some of the other, cheaper wind-up alarm clocks. First, one would expect to have to adjust the fast/slow setting, as the mechanism is naturally going to loosen up over the first couple of days, and probably was not set very accurately at the factory. All understandable. I was amazed to find that for the past 2 days that I've had it, it's kept time within 1 minute! (Your mileage may vary). One of my other clocks I've been tweaking for days trying to get it to within 5 min over 24 hrs. Second, the wind-up key has a nice full shape, rather than the typical flat metal. It is easy to turn, feels much smoother than others, and one wind-up is good for 36 hours, as opposed to a little over 24 hrs for the others. I've had them stop overnight because I didn't wind them up super-tight. Third, the construction is very unique, and high quality. I was surprised by its shape - it looks like a miniature wash basin with a glass bottom and is all metal, robust construction - a very handsome retro look. It is also a good size - quite visible, but not too big. I also like the way the alarm is set on a separate, smaller dial. This avoids sometimes misreading the alarm hand as the time. And yes, it will wake the dead.

Do Not Buy This Clock If You're Arthritic!
Cheap Chinese knock-off of the old twin bell clocks. It's big and loud...just what I wanted, but is difficult to get the time adjusted just right. Worst of all, it's extremely difficult to wind if you have arthritis in your hands! I have to use a pair of pliers, but got tired of that and trying to adjust the time so put it back in the box. It's too bad China can't make decent products, I think it's time to boycott China made products as I'm sick of paying for cheap made garbage.

So far, so good
These remarks are preliminary. I may need to come back at a later date. The reviews of wind-up clocks on Amazon are somewhat discouraging. Most rate them as poor. So, I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of this clock - the materials it is made from do not feel 'sheap' like some others I have bought in the past - and it works. I hope I still feel the same way in a few months.

Bulova B8124 Bellman Clock
Pros - Large face, easy to read numbers. Loud alarm bell. Cons - Has to be adjusted to the max in order to keep time. Keys/controls on back are too close together, awkward trying to wind the clock ( if you have large fingers or arthritis, this clock is not for you). Must be wound daily, will not go more than 24 hours. The screw that holds the metal stop (to keep the alarm from ringing) must be tightened periodically otherwise it will ring even if you don't want it to. The dots marking the hours are not luminescent. Somewhat flimsy construction, not what I expected from a Bulova product.

Tricky to set time pace
Has a very satisfying 2/second tick, bells are crisp and loud rings for a decent duration and reliably. It is tricky to get it to accurately keep time over the duration of a full windup/ run down. I managed to get it to keep +/- 5 mins over approximately 32 hours. Great for heavy sleepers and those who enjoy the ritual of a wind up mechanical clock
