Ok for a 10 Gallon, but too much for smaller.
I had this in a 5 gallon shrimp tank, and the shrimp didn't like the flow. They also got inside the filter and I lost one before I realized. I would go with a sponge filter for shrimp tanks...I thought this would work for "flow" purposes. I have it on a Betta tank instead with shrimp in the bottom, and it's been great. It's also good for small fry, because they don't get sucked up.

Easy fix if your shrimp like to go into filter
I can see where shrimp may like to hide in the filter output if they have limited places to hide in your tank (remember shrimp need LOTS of plants & crevices to hide). If you have an issue with your shrimp sneaking into the filter this way here are some tips 1) see if you have enough material & decorations in your tank. Again they need lots of places to hide. 2) put a piece of filter bag over the output spout. Very easy fix & if you use part of your filter from your previous filter, like I did, you get the added benefit of keeping some of the beneficial bacteria from your original filter material!! So far so good, nice flow, low profile, & very quiet.

Nice filter, but not shrimp proof
This filter does seem to be a nice, quiet filter. I like the sponge over the suction, which provides a nice place for my shrimp to go to eat. Now to the cons….. the filter cartridge that comes with the filter is thin and cheap; instead I bought a multi layer filter sponge, and cut it to size. This works much better. The biggest problem I’m having is that it’s killing my shrimp! I was noticing that every couple of days, I had less and less shrimp, but saw no dead shrimp. I removed the lid to the filter and looked in, but saw no shrimp. After sever days, I kept losing more shrimp. I removed the sponge attachment at the bottom of the filter, and about 5 shrimp came rushing out. I did see at least one dead. When I set the filter back up, I saw one of the shrimp swim right up to where the water comes out of the filter, and began to walk around the filter sponge. I removed the shrimp, and when I was trying to think of a solution, the shrimp did it again. I had to remove the sponge attachment at the bottom of the filter, to get to the shrimp again, but unfortunately it had died. Because of my tank set up, I need to keep the filter down low in the tank, in order to use the lid. I have a cat, so using the tank lid is a must.

To reiterate what others have said, not shrimp safe
There's a pretty big design flaw in the intake. It is really flimsy for one, so much so that even before modification there's a gap at the top of the intake that I can't close because the grille pops partially out of place. The gap is big enough for shrimp to get sucked in, perhaps even adult shrimp. To reduce the risk I glued 120 mesh stainless steel to the inside of the intake grille which did not negatively impact performance but did improve the side gaps the provided sponge leaves due to it being cut poorly. Luckily I only use the pump with chemical filtration media where it only needs to run briefly, so I just supervise it while it is running but it sucks that I feel compelled to. This pump has an extremely strong flow rate. This might seem like a good thing for filtering the water, but since it's supposedly catered for shrimp it doesn't make sense that the current it creates is really strong and not something ideal for shrimp. The pump says it's for 10 gallons, but due to the flow rate it seems like it can easily handle a larger tank albeit maybe not with the filter it has in it. The strong pump kicks up debris and moss at the bottom of the tank on the opposite side despite the tank's water level being 15 inches high. The bubbles the pump makes reach the bottom of the tank, that's how strong the pump is. The water stream the pump creates is also angled so it travels diagonally through the tank. The filter area his pretty side and has a sponge in it, so if the filter and/or sponge are removed you can fit fairly large chemical filtration media in it which is nice.

Good for the price
The media could not be loaded. It's very good. I got 2 for my 10 gallon fish tank. Fish no shrimp. I do have to clean the bottom filter a lot but I figure that's because I have 9 fish and that's what it's supposed to do. Not super loud gives off that white noise type. I did have to cut my own carbon sponge to fit inside the filter so the water could filter properly and not run over or on the side of the cartridge and cause foam in the filter. I change my water once a month and do my weekly maintenance like I said I have 9 fish so that's a lot of waste that needs filtering and these do the job. Hope this helps out

Perfectly safe for shrimp so far!
I bought this mainly for baby shrimp to prevent them being sucked into the filter, and so far so good! I haven't seen a snail pass the intake successfully yet but I think they'd also be able to be anywhere on the filter unharmed. It's quiet and does a good job, and the suction seems adequate to maybe even a little excessive for a 10 gallon tank. I put it in the middle of the long side of a 20x10" 10 gallon and it doesn't seem to make too much current for my guppies as long as I keep the water relatively high.

The bottom little sponge cover sucks
Okay, there's no loud noise which is great, but the design of it is rough. The bottom little sponge flow cap doesn’t fit correctly at all, so it leaves a decent gap that any little baby shrimp and snails can get sucked into. Its also been sucking plants. The flow is also a little bit stronger than I would like for the shrimp to be comfy in. Maybe better for fish instead of shrimp!

Perfect for 5 gallon
Great, small filter for a 5 gallon, low tech, planted tank.
