Favorite pre shave oil

Can’t go wrong with this pre shave oil. Just don’t use too much or your still will become oily afterwards. Otherwise, love the product since it’s great for sensitive skin when shaving

5 stars because this changed my D/E shaving routine for the better. One review below used the word "gamechanger" and I would also go so far as to use that word. I also did a little research on this before I bought it to see if you could use it without shaving cream. And you definitely can. Although Art of Shaving will probably say you should use their shaving cream, you don't need to, in my experience. My shaving cream is not soap but I prefer Truehill & Fit's cream that you can apply by hand because it is unscented and has a mild antiseptic. However, I don't really need it when I use the pre-shave oil. The oil does a number of things for me. First, a few drops on both sides of the face and the shaving areas, rubbing the oil in a little bit, having only prepared the face by washing with warm water. It has a mild, eucalyptus-like smell that I like and when I rub it in, I really can see that the whiskers have been raised up. Now, without shaving cream, I shave. If you ever shaved with one of those old-fashioned razor cartridges like they sell at Wal-Mart that comes with a "glide strip" that doesn't really work, this is basically that glide strip but applied on your whole face and it works. The shave I experience is enjoyable and compared to shaving cream, I like being able to watch the blade move over the exact whiskers and area that I am shaving. Sometimes shaving cream obscures minor contours and smaller hairs that get missed but with this oil, I can watch exactly what I'm doing and there is no cream in the way. The shave that I get is closer and the most important thing to me, I've tried all kinds of shaving creams but always got a little redness and some razor burn. I have not been getting redness or razor burn since starting to use this product. Then when you're done, it washes off the face very easily and does not leave an oily residue. It does leave the face feeling moist and I like that. But not like oily or greasy moist. So that is good. Afterwards, I still apply a little Proraso after-shave. I'm not even sure why I do that anymore except that I like the smell. One thing I have noticed and I don't consider this a big drawback compared to the benefit, is that the whiskers and shaving oil can clog up your blade a little bit so you need to be a little more diligent about keeping the blade area from getting clogged up by rinsing it a little more frequently while you are shaving. Every few shaves, about when I change the blade, I put the D/E razor in 90% Isopropyl alcohol or just rub it with a paper towel with alcohol on it and that removes any trace of old whiskers and oil residue. I used to put off shaving when I used Mach 3 cartridges, basically because they were making me go broke so I would try to go as long as I could without shaving. Now I look forward to shaving. And the benefit is that my wife never did like my scruff and she likes the smooth face and that just ends up working out well for both of us. I find myself now watching TV or walking around seeing guys with horrendous goatees and facial hair ... and I want to shave it off ...

I am a huge fan of the pre-shave oil. I have very sensitive skin and would get razor burn on my neck. Not only did it hurt, it looked bad. I started using the Walmart version of the pre-shave oil, that you can also get on here for a few dollars and it helped but not enough. I switched to the Art of Shaving pre-shaving oil and what a difference. That said, it is very expensive. $25 for two ounces. I decided to make my own to see if it worked as well. I figured if it didn't, I would buy more from Amazon. I order four bottles at a time, so that is over $100 with shipping. I bought both the olive oil and castor oil at Walmart when I was grocery shopping. If you like it scented, Walmart has lavender oil too for a few dollars. My total investment in all products, to include the $0.75 three ounce bottle I bought was about $10. I wasn't real scientific about mixing it up either. I used a kitchen spoon. I poured two spoons of the olive oil into a mixing cup then added one spoon of the castor oil. I did that several times then poured it into my container. Then I added a few drops of the lavender at the end. I used it this weekend and it was fantastic. Thus for under $10 I can make more when I want and saved over $90 in my first go-around. Whole process took me about five minutes. If you don't want to mess with making your own, buy the expensive stuff and it will make a huge difference with your shaving. I apply my shaving creme after I put the oil on my face and neck. Razor glides so much easier. Good luck.

This item met my need.

I have very soft tender skin. The oil helps prevent razor burn. In my case, it is very important. I would recommend this product for men with similar conditions.

Best scent ever

Not gonna lie, I just buy this stuff for the scent. It’s one of my favorites. And the irony of it being called unscented is not lost on me. But it most definitely has a scent and like I said it’s my favorite. I’m not so good at scents that I can tell you exactly what it smells like but to me it’s a little like leather and cloves mixed together. Not sure how else to put it. And the cloves smell is more complementary and not the predominant of the two. Hope that helps.

Great oil, way too expensive!

Have always li Ed the smell, feel, and effectiveness of this oil, but it is way overpriced. I found a different oil that I like just as much at a 1/3 of the price.

Truly excellent product - why not available in the UK?

The Art of Shaving system is inexplicably unavailable in the UK except through resellers, even though it is Gillette's premium shaving brand. This stuff is truly excellent - all of it. If you travel to the US buy a full set and then top-up using these resellers. The products last for ages (e.g. 10+ months for the shaving cream) and so are actually as cheap as the cheap products you can buy. Use sparingly and you will get 3+ months out of this tiny bottle of oil.

Part of my shaving routine

This is an excellent product which helps to give a smooth and quick wet shave. A little goes a long way so it is cost efficient too. One star lost only because it leaves the hand basin a little oily.

Ideal for men who have sensitive skin

After applying a hot towel over the face and neck areas spread a thin layer of pre shave oil over the skin. Finally apply the shave cream on top of the oil. The resulting shaving experience is extremely smooth, close and non irritating. Prior to following this shaving procedure my shaves were rough and many resulted in cuts, bumps and ingrown hairs. This size bottle is larger than most and is good value. The scent is pleasant but not over powering.

Fantastic product for super sensitive skin

This is a fantastic product if you have super sensitive skin. It's the best high quality product I purchase for my husband. I like it so well, that I also like to use it sparingly on my face for extra dry winter months. Also it is amazing in our hair, ladies! Tiny bit goes a long way at calming frizz and repairing split ends

It's scented

My shaving system used to involve pre-shave oil. I thought I'd try it again, but wanted an unscented regimen. Bought this with the cream. Nothing wrong with the cream. The oil however, is scented (be-in naturally, or artificially). It has a slightly above mild scent of what I'd describe as spice/bohemian. As a product, it does what it's supposed to; oil is easy to use and helps my blades glide. However the scent remains for a loooong time, and for that it defeats the purpose of the purchase. So I wont be using it anymore.
