This is the best train set that I ever had

Lionel New York Central Ready-to-Play Set on my READY TO PLAY GARDEN Layout.

The media could not be loaded. I must admit, when I purchased my first Lionel Ready to Play set ( The Hogwarts Express), I was a little dissapointed that it did not run on LGB 45mm track. These sets come with their own gauge track( slightly wider at 50mm). However, I decided to go with it and build my garden railway with READY TO PLAY track, getting extra track packs via amazon. Since then I have purchased the Thomas Tank Engine Ready to Play and this NEW YORK CENTRAL set. I have also purchased points ( switches) to add an extension later. So overall, I am more than impressed and hope Lionel adds more to this range. I would like to see some extra wagons and coaches sold separately, as these locos are quite powerful and can pull far more than what comes with the sets.

Best toy train for kids 3-6 yrs age

The thing about this train is it actually works. It’s large enough that it’s easy to get it back on the tracks without driving yourself crazy in aligning the tiny wheels. Overall the best train I’ve found on the market. Totally worth the price. My son has never been this happy in a while.

Great train for younger kids

My son wanted a train, but I didn't want to get him something that would just break after a few months. So we opted to spend a bit more for the Lionel. It isn't their famed metal trains, but it isn't cheap plastic either. He has dropped it a couple times and it doesn't show signs of abuse. The tracks are easy for him to put together and rearrange. We have now bought one for both boys, 10 and 8. I had the polar express version for years we put out at Christmas and they both loved helping set it up and operating it so I can see this working for kids 5 and older.

not worth the price

this is a decent battery operated train. I think the electronics are great on it and make it simple to use. the controls are intuitive and quite responsive. the lights on the engine are bright and do not bleed through the plastic on the body. But the rest of the train is quite cheap. the couplers on the cars do not automatically connect, making it difficult for a young child to connect the train together and keep it on the track. the track is also quite flimsy and thin. if this was $50-$60 is wood be good. For $100, it is obviously for the brand name on the box. it was quite disappointing and I expected better from Lionel.

Grandson Loved it!

Nice rig. we now have several of these train sets. This one has better sounds and the speed control has been improved since our earlier ones (two of the steam-type freight locomotives). My grandson is better able to control the start/stop control.

Caution for Parents!

This train is perfect in every way: battery life, sounds, function, etc. EXCEPT, it is beyond tedious to get on the tracks and to link up the cars! The wheels are tricky to get on the tracks, and the coupling that connects the cars together requires that you lift the cars up to connect them, which takes the wheels off the tracks. It can take ten minutes of tedium to connect the cars and get them all on the tracks, thus, testing the patience of a toddler. Having said all that, once its all running, it has provided hours of delight to our grandson.

My grandson’s favorite toy. (and he has a LOT of them! The remote is the game-changer. Excellent.

Remote didn't work

Put new batteries in and the remote wouldn't even turn on. Put another set of batteries in and hold the device just right and it turns on intermittently. When the train doesn't sync with the remote it makes an awful beeping sound (which would happen every few seconds). Sometimes the remote was on and connected but the train wouldn't actually move, just the noises would work. Try explaining to a 4 year old that the train that Santa set up around the tree doesn't actually work and we need to send it back to Santa's Workshop to be fixed. Wouldn't suggest buying, spent $170 on an unusable product. Track is nice and big and train cars are good quality. Was bigger than expected. Nice to look at. You will need 6 C Batteries for the train and 3 AAA batteries for the remote.
