LED Accent Lighting
I essentially bought this as both a) a toy, and b) a test of how/where I would use such lighting. First, let me provide a couple important notes on this product. 1) The actual lights are on two separate 1 foot long strips. They can be linked together to create a single 2 foot strip of lights. If you want some space between the two strips, you will need to purchase an extension cable separately. The connections are flat with 4 pins. The strips will fall apart easily until mounted with the 3M tape. 2) You will have to mount a control box somewhere. The light strip connects to a small control box. The control box has a cable that connects to the strip of lights on one end and a power supply connector cable and a cable with an IR remote sensor on the other side. The box can be hidden, but the IR sensor must be in view of the remote to work properly. 3) You will have to run a power cable from the control box to an outlet. The power supply is a 'wall-wart' type plug, so you will need room to in front of the plug. It is also not very stealthy so it is better to hide it behind furniture or an appliance. 4) The remote works via IR so it must be directed at the IR sensor and cannot be too far from the sensor. It will be limited like any IR remote. It would be possible to have an RF remote 'feed' the sensor on this device to provide greater control flexibility. This, in fact, may be a necessity for some installation ideas or home automation control. 5) If you have the lights shine on a non-white surface, it will change the color and intensity of the reflected light. The walls in my living room are a light green and I felt any color to be unpleasant on this surface. I think the strips work better on white or on wood surfaces. Other colors may react differently, but the green was really bad. So, here is where I tried the device. First, I put it under the kitchen cabinets. It can provide a lot of light on the white setting, but LED lighting seems stark to me and I'm not a big fan of that type of lighting in the kitchen. Then, I put it under my fireplace mantle. This was kind of cool, but I didn't have anywhere to run the power cable to. Then, I put the strips behind one of my wall-mounted guitars. This is where this product really shines (pun intended)! Picking some small area to provide some accent lighting to make something pop or add interest. There are a lot of areas you can play with. Stairways, under cabinets, under bookcase shelves, behind pictures on a wall, etc. etc. Let your imagination run wild. For full solutions, you will probably need several other products that are all offered here. These are longer strips of lights (even come in 20 foot rolls), extension cabling (to separate individual strips), and y-connectors (to allow the lights to branch out in different directions). I am still looking for a final installation place and I am willing to buy more additions for this product when I do.

Works well but not as bright as I had hoped
I wanted something I could put on the top of a floating wall between the kitchen and great room. The wall is about 8 feet high, with three or four feet between it and the ceiling. I bought this and the extension kit to give me four strips total. The IR receiver is annoying since that makes it impossible to totally hide these, but I at least found a relatively unobtrusive spot for it. Controls work well, as long as you have a good line of sight. When aiming at the receiver, I've never had a missed button press. The color is good, with a nice variety, and the pulsing options that cycle through all the shades is neat. But it's not as bright as I had hoped. I wanted something that reflected well off of the white ceiling above it to give me a little light in the great room when it's night time out and I didn't want full lighting turned on. And it does illuminate the space well enough to get around with all the rest of the lights off when it's dark out, but I had wanted a little more light than I got. And this is with the extension kit giving me four strips, not just the two that come with the main package. But for the price, while it doesn't do as well as I had hoped, it certainly does a good job and is a great way to give either some mood lighting, or in my instance, supplemental night lighting. The red option works great since it is so much easier on the eyes at night. If this were put under cabinets or something, where there's not a lot of space between it and the surface opposite of it, they would appear much brighter, so in those applications these would be outstanding. But in a little more spacious area, you won't get as much brightness.

A great set of lights for DIY accent lighting, though, you'll probably want to get some better tape.
I love these lights. I had two other sets (the regular, non-pro versions), that I set up on some glass doors on an entertainment center, and I got these to deck out my new computer desk, running the strips in the grooved handles along the front of the desk and the shelf above; Anthrocart owners will know what I mean. This gives me a nice handy instant work light when I need it that's never in the way as it's recessed into the desk. When I don't need it, I have some nice colorful accent lighting. Also, since I added a strip across the bottom of the front edge of the desk, I've added a safety feature that lets me see if a cat is under it, so I don't accidentally roll me chair over a tail, or step on anyone. And it just makes the desk look cool at night. The pro features of this set let me make 6 customized presets, with brightness levels that cannot be attained with the normal sets. At the lowest possible white level, there's enough light to operate a keyboard, or light the floor for safety, or to display art/sculptures/models in display cases without the light being distracting. On the inside of a glass door, along the frame, these light up the contents quite attractively, in any color you'd like. The only real downside of these so far is the double sided tape backing; it tends to come loose after a while. In fact, when I first set this one up, with the lighting strip on my shelf facing down, the entire four foot strip fell off within the first few hours. Cleaning the surface again and occasionally pressing in the strip a couple times a day has prevented further mishaps. As these get warmer though, the adhesive on the tape begins to get gooey, so you might need to look into a stronger tape. Age doesn't help either, as my second set of lights really lost its stickiness before I mounted them. I originally saw these at Fry's for about $160, so it was really nice finding this set here for a bit less than I paid fr the regular sets. These are expandable as well; you can buy additional cables and connectors, and even strips of light by the foot, to light pretty much anything. However, if you want strips to have different colors/pattern, you need to get another power unit for each, as they only output one pattern at a time. Update: After a couple months of constantly needing to be pressed down, the strips on my desk finally fell off again, only hours after I pressed the entire strip back onto the clean surface it was applied to. Time to get some good double sided tape for these now.
