Ozeri runner 3D Pedometer
Writing this review from the perspective of someone who wants a ped for accurate walking and jogging distance, but is not interested in tracking cumulative 24/7 movements. Most of the newer brands focus on 24/7 and automatic midnight resets, which is not how I exercise; I like to track/record walking/jogging as discrete events. Amazingly, many of the new models don't have a manual reset--you have to wait for midnight to reset for the next event. What a brain cramp! So good points first: 1.Ozeri has manual reset (as well as all the auto 24/7 features). 2. After 27 separate walk and 3-mile jog tests, step accuracy in direct, consistent walking and jogging is 99%+ (less than 1% error). For those interested in full 24/7 movements, I would say this ped is sensitive and accurate, but rightfully somewhat dampened so it doesn't record every little wave of your hand as a step as some others do. 3. Operating buttons are easy to find but not easily accidentally disturbed, so you won't finish to find you've inadvertently ruined your recording. 4. Strong clip. Screen easy to read. Comes with lanyard some might use. 5. As is the case with most peds, recording in walk mode begins automatically when you move. But to record in jog mode you have to proactively press Start--a good thing because it ensures your jog data is isolated and controlled. This also starts the timer. You may have to work at remembering to press Start for jogging if you're used to auto starts, but I like it that way. Minor dislikes: 1. Instructions say stride input increments are only in gross 0.5 of a foot, which makes your heart sink until you later find that's a typo and it really increments in 0.1 foot. First ped I've had that inputs stride in feet rather than inches, but no problem. 2. Having % of 24 hour Goal constantly on display in lower left corner is annoying, 'cause I don't use it. 3. Default starting screen display shows time of day and steps, whereas I'd prefer to have default show steps and miles. Overall an accurate, sturdy, nice-looking ped.

Older than it appears, but competent
Since the default year setting is 2012 and it is now 2014, the gadget is older than it appears. That may explain why some reviewers found the battery died quickly, even though the battery is protected by a plastic strip so you have to remove the battery and strip in order to activate the pedometer. They suggest using a screwdriver, but I found a letter opener worked just fine. I also ran into a bit of confusion when setting the date, because it is set up in European format (day, month, year). I toggled around a bit and probably didn't get my own settings quite right, but I'm not a perfectionist about pedometers and an estimation is good enough for me. Some settings confused me, perhaps because I'm not an athlete. Why would anyone set 12 hours instead of 24, or vice versa? Do I walk in my sleep? The pedometer is easy to open and comes with a quick-start cheat sheet as well as a nicely written and illustrated large chart for setup and use. It has a clip and a wrist band and even the wrist band has a miniature clip, so you can hang it, clip it, or put it in your pocket. I particularly like the tri-axis technology, in comparison with previous pedometers I owned which had to be fastened precisely at the waist. I'm trying this out by carrying it in different spots to see whether the results are noticeably different, say, if it is in my pocket or on my lapel during my daily walks. This is fun!

Almost perfect pedometic with just one limitation
I used to buy cheap pedometers that has to be manually reset each day. Then I found the Ozeri 4x3razor Tri-Axis pedometer. That was probably the best pedometer I've ever used except for the limited 7 days memory. When the Ozeri 4x3razor failed within a year of usage, I searched for another one and found the Ozeri 4x3runner. What caught my attention was the 30 days memory. Comparing the two pedometers, here are some of the positives and negatives. 4x3razor Positives + Very small and thin + Very reliable + Caloric count distinguishes between fast/brisks walks and slow walks Negatives - Kept falling out of the belt clip - Failed within a year 4x3runner Positives + very reliable + 30 day memory! + Belt clip very strong Negatives - Does not distinguish between fast/brisk walk and slow walk in caloric count - Not as thin as 4x3razor The main negative for me is that this does not distinguish between fast and brisk walking versus slow walking. I tested it out, walking a mile very slow in 30 minutes with many stops and walking a mile in a brisk 12 minutes; the caloric count was the same. The 4x3razor distinguished between the two so it gives me an incentive to do brisk walks. This is the only weakness of this pedometer and is a deal-breaker for me. When I get a future pedometer, unless this option is added in, I will probably not get this again.

Secure and unlikely to become lost during use
I've used countless pedometers over the last decade while out walking with the children. Some are cheap and only work for a few days. One was very expensive but fell out of my pocket on a walk and could not be found anywhere. So a good mid-range pedometer seems to work the best for me. This particular pedometer can be put in its holder that then clips onto a waist band, or you can put it in your pocket, and clip it to the pocket for extra security so it doesn't fall out. I have used it at the same time as a wrist pedometer, and the two are pretty close in timing, although this usually tracks slightly more steps, but it could be that I sometimes walk with a hand in a pocket or holding a child's hand and thus the wrist pedometer doesn't pick up all movement. There isn't an app or way to download the info, but I'm more of a paper-and-pen gal anyway, so this doesn't bother me. If you jog, there is a specific run counter that can be used. You can program in your weight and stride, and then have this tell you how many calories you've burned during a run, or over the course of a day (which can be quite enlightening as to how much effort it takes to burn off small treats). So far so good, and you'll be sure to see me out this summer with a pedometer in my pocket!

Water and sweat resistant, compact and versatile
I have purchased this for a Christmas present and was pleased at the overall size which isn’t intrusive. It’s got some great modes on it including fat burned, calories etc and has a dual walking and jogging modes . It comes with a belt clip and battery included and is water and sweat resistant. Perfect for rainy days! It has a 30 day memory to track performance and a motion sensor that detects when you are in the car. Great for when you are driving to the running club! It will fit in the smallest of pockets but also comes with a belt clip and lanyard - I bought this for a family member who is starting running in the new year and this will be perfect to help get her started

Overall great, though would prefer to see an improved model in future
Overall this is a great pedometer -- loads of features, and fairly simple to use once you get used to it. Small size means it can be easily put in a pocket. Uncommon features it's worth buying for include telling you what percentage of steps you've done (of a target amount you set), how many steps remaining to do, and how many minutes and hours you've walked that day. It resets all stats at midnight each day, and you can scroll-back through the last 30 days to see all stats for that day. But it is a shame it tells you fat burnt in ounces, not grams. And your step goal can only be to the nearest 1000: so you could set 10,000 as your goal, then set 11,000 as your next one. Be better if this went up in 100s, to give people a smaller target each time which would be more-achievable. And having to input stride-distance in feet rather than inches is also really odd: I know of no-other imperial pedometer that does it this way. It's accuracy can be hit-and-miss depending where you wear it: best places are a shirt pocket, or the small coin-pocket most jeans have. I find it virtually always accurate in those places. But put it in your main jean pockets, or trouser pockets, and expect each time you finish walking for the count to be off by about 5-10 steps. Unlike with some of the older 2D pedometers (which you would wear in the centre of your belt) there is no way to adjust the sensitivity. Overall for the price paid I'd say feature-wise it's one of the best around. I'd love to see an improved version in future, using grams and inches, rather than ounces and feet, as outlined earlier. And even better would be a gyroscope version, so it could tell when you were walking uphill or downhill and give even more-accurate calorie counts.
