No Sanding Required! Great Bit!

Honestly, I really was skeptical regarding the extra cost of the Freud Forstner bits. For years I had been using a Porter Cable set that cost much less and was actually pretty satisfied with the results. I usually had to do some sanding but figured that was just normal. When I needed a size that wasn't included in my set I started to order a cheaper bit but decided to find out if the Freud bits were really as good as the hype said. Well, they are! Just take a look at the pictures I have attached and labeled. I drilled into a scrap pine 4x4 with a Porter Cable and the Freud bits. The serrated edge on the Freud really does make a difference. The sides are so clean, even in the soft pine, that it doesn't require any sanding at all. I guess there really is something to the old adage that you get what you pay for, at least in this case. From now on I'll be buying Freud bits and have no problem recommending you do the same if you want quality.

Not as effective as cost and reputation would suggest it should be

I've used Freud 10" table saw blades for years and always found them good. My experience with this bit wasn't up to my expectations. I needed this bit (1-7/8") for a woodworking bench I was building. I was using 1-7/8" diameter slip tenons I turned on my lathe at critical points in the bench structure and I needed this bit for the mortises. I was drilling into both side grain and end grain of hickory. My driver was a high quality 13 amp Milwaukee hand drill with a side handle. (Don't try to use one of these bits without a side handle!) I ordered this bit after quickly dulling a cheaper Forstner. Much to my surprise this bit had trouble with the hickory end grain too, despite my careful control of speed and pressure. It dulled pretty quickly and had trouble making progress just like the cheaper bit. Since, despite my best efforts, I have not had much success sharpening my cheaper Forstner bits, and not having any interest in trying to sharpen this Freud, I came away thinking I might have been better off buying a cheaper bit, or two, to complete my work. Oh, and the packaging was damaged when the bit arrived, and despite its cost it had no protective cover for storing. My cheaper bits have protective covers.

1 7/8 inch Forstner drill bit

Did what I bought this bit to do - drill 9 inch deep hole into end grain on a wood lathe. Drill then back out a little, drill and then back out a little until reach depth - this will reduce heat buildup that can both ruin the tool and the wood

Nice and smooth Forstner Bit

This is a nice and smooth Forstner Bit. Cuts into hardwood without any problem.

Didn't last as long as expected.

It worked great when they are new but after 15 holes in 1/4' plywood, I was surprised at how dull it got. I Freud has a great reputation for saw blades and I was expecting they to hold up longer. I was disappointed that it dulled so quickly.

Sharp, straight and true!

This is exactly what a Forstner bit should be, it is very sharp and straigh, no wobbles. I purchased a 16 bit set with a wood box, all but 4 bits were not true and wobbled in the drill press. It is impossible to make a precise hole with them. This bit is heavenly compared to them. It is made in Austria. There is a noticable difference in the products I've made with this bit.

Painful to pay $25 to drill one hole

Painful to pay $25 to drill one hole. Worked great though. Drilling a veneered wood. I clamped some soft one by fours on each side. Cut cleanly, no tearing of veneer.
